Postpartum Support

How do I find reliable childcare when I have to go back to work?

How do I find reliable childcare when I have to go back to work?

The thought of going back to work after having a baby can bring up a whole mess of emotions for many new moms. Until our employers, and heck, our country, can figure out how to promote exceptional maternity leave, the reality is that going back to work and leaving your baby with someone that isn't you is all to real.

One of Tulsa Family Doulas' most popular services is postpartum doula support where we provide certified support for the new mom during the vulnerable transition to life with a newborn with daytime, overnight and live-in care when family may not be nearby to provide help.

Many times, when our postpartum doula work is beginning to end, we will help transition the family to working with a childcare provider, most often a nanny. Our favorite nanny agency is E-Nanny and the owner, Erika Slade, is incredibly passionate about providing exceptional nannies for her clients.

Oh For the Love of Hair

Oh For the Love of Hair

I am almost 4 months postpartum, and like every postpartum experience I’ve had, it is the ending of an era; the era of glamorous hair. During pregnancy I grow thick long locks and after birth, a few months later, my drain is clogged and I’m calling (crying) to my sister Kayla, who happens to be a hairstylist asking, once again, if this is normal and am I going to become bald? To which I’m sure she rolls her eyes then tells me to come in for my overdue hair appointment and makes me (mostly) right as rain.

Let's talk real for a bit. Being a new mom is hard. Pull your hair out, oh my gosh, I can't believe I did this, hard. You mutter words under your breath at 3AM after you had only laid your head back down on the pillow at 2:25AM. And then you take another look at your sweet baby and get all gushy again.

The scariest depiction of zombie movies and video games have nothing on you as you stumble to the kitchen in the mornings mumbling, "Booooobs, Poooooop, Coooooofffeeee."

Tulsa Placenta Encapsulation: It's not just for celebrities any more!

Tulsa Placenta Encapsulation: It's not just for celebrities any more!

Tulsa Placenta Encapsulation is a growing trend! In February of 2014, Tulsa's Channel 8 aired a story about mothers in Tulsa choosing Placenta Encapsulation. What this means is that women are saving their placentas after the delivery of their baby to be processed and encapsulated into pills they can consume as a way to help recover after childbirth. Although the practices is ages old, it's growing in popularity among celebrities like Mad Men's January Jones and Kim Kardashian, and many women right here in Tulsa!

How do I leave without you? I want to know...

How do I leave without you? I want to know...

I did all I could to make it to the car without breaking down. I fumbled with my keys and held my breath just long enough to open the door, get in and close it before collapsing on the steering wheel in a heap of sobs. I felt as if I couldn't breathe thinking about what stood behind me. I didn't look back as I pulled out of the parking space, out of the parking lot, put on my blinker and sped away, frantically wiping tears from my blurred line of vision.

A CYCLING DOULA'S OBSERVATIONS FROM LIFE ON THE TRAIL

Last month, a major item was marked off my bucket list when I rode in the Louisiana MS 150. This is a two day, 150 mile bike ride that raises funds for Multiple Sclerosis. Preparing for this event required me to ride my bike ... a lot!  I rode in the heat, I rode in the rain, I rode on trails and roads in towns in every direction around Tulsa.  I met some amazing new people, saw some incredible wildlife (minus the tarantula somewhere in Bixby, OK!)
