Do I need a night nanny, baby nurse or postpartum doula to help with my newborn?

Do I need a night nanny, baby nurse or postpartum doula to help with my newborn?

It was only a couple years ago that postpartum doulas started becoming consistently more common in Tulsa. For the most part, doulas were associated with helping women in pregnancy and birth have a positive experience through education and support. Now, the term doula encompasses so much more than simply birth support, and extends to going into the family's home and helping the entire family adjust to life with a newborn.

In these last few months, Tulsa Family Doulas has been hired for, completed or will complete soon 842 hours of in-home postpartum doula support. That means for all of those blissful hours, the entire family is well-cared for. Postpartum doulas are trained to not only assist with basic newborn care, but to help ease the whole family into their new roles with the new baby.

Did you ever randomly run across some little life hack that changed everything? Okay, so maybe that’s a little dramatic, but seriously…

The Beauty of Butter

I like butter – I mean who doesn’t? There is a point at which butter is the perfect temperature. Unfortunately, that spreadable, toast worthy place of deliciousness is hard to reach.

What's the connection between butter and babies?

So what is this diatribe to butter doing on a blog dedicated to all things birth-y and doula-y (these should seriously be words, am I right?) Sometimes the best solutions are simple, everyday things that are right under our noses and rooted in the past ways of doing things.

How will you spend your time with your newborn?

How will you spend your time with your newborn?

As much as people want to focus on the surreal and ethereal part of bringing a baby into the world, the time spent in the most delicate stages, emotionally and physically, with your newborn can bring on a fog like no other. So, how are you going to plan now to make the most of your time with your new baby?

First of all let's all acknowledge something here.

YOU GREW A HUMAN INSIDE YOUR BODY! A whole human.

Sit with that a minute.

Your body is crazy amazing. YOU are crazy amazing!

Tulsa's Newest New Mom Must Have

Let's talk real for a bit. Being a new mom is hard. Pull your hair out, oh my gosh, I can't believe I did this, hard. You mutter words under your breath at 3AM after you had only laid your head back down on the pillow at 2:25AM. And then you take another look at your sweet baby and get all gushy again.

The scariest depiction of zombie movies and video games have nothing on you as you stumble to the kitchen in the mornings mumbling, "Booooobs, Poooooop, Coooooofffeeee."

A CYCLING DOULA'S OBSERVATIONS FROM LIFE ON THE TRAIL

Last month, a major item was marked off my bucket list when I rode in the Louisiana MS 150. This is a two day, 150 mile bike ride that raises funds for Multiple Sclerosis. Preparing for this event required me to ride my bike ... a lot!  I rode in the heat, I rode in the rain, I rode on trails and roads in towns in every direction around Tulsa.  I met some amazing new people, saw some incredible wildlife (minus the tarantula somewhere in Bixby, OK!)
