Chiropractic Care for Pregnancy, Infants & Kids: How It Can Help You and Your Child Live a Healthier Life
As a Mom and a chiropractor, I understand the importance of helping our children live healthier lives. Since I am currently pregnant with our second child, I also understand the importance of receiving regular chiropractic care throughout pregnancy.
Although there are a variety of areas that can be addressed which ultimately help everyone to be healthier, the one I am going focus on is chiropractic care and the function of the nervous system.
Pregnancy Exacerbates Issues
I frequently care for pregnant women and children in practice. Pregnant women often times are referred by either their OB, Midwife or doula because they are experiencing some type of discomfort. Although this is a reason to seek care, it is also important to start getting your spine checked as early as possible to avoid some of the complaints that seem to surface the further the pregnancy progresses.
One thing I always mention to the pregnant women I see, is pregnancy is really good at exacerbating a preexisting problem. I also see many women seeking the Webster technique who have a breech baby. Webster is a beneficial and effective technique, but it should be noted that turning a breech baby is left to doctors and/or midwives.
Chiropractic for Babies and Kids?
Pregnant women and parents alike are looking for alternative ways to improve the health of their unborn child and/or children without resorting to unnecessary drugs or surgery. I also frequently care for infants and children. What I have found for some, is that adjusting an infant or child is a foreign concept.
As a society we are led to believe chiropractic care is for neck and back pain so why would a baby need to be checked? In my opinion that is a fair question to ask, but what if I told you I do not “treat” symptoms? I do not “treat” back pain just like I do not “treat” ear infections. That does not mean I do not see those conditions frequently in my office though.
Let me explain further:
For adults and children alike, I am trained to detect bones in the spine that have moved out of their normal position. When that happens, it puts pressure on or pinches the nerves. What is concerning is our nerves tell our bodies how to work, so if signals are not able to get to the target organ, our bodies are not going to work at their optimal potential. Therefore, we are living a life out of balance. Our children are also living a life out of balance.
You may be asking yourself, how do I know if I am out of balance or my infant or child is out of balance? Although the following lists are not all inclusive or definitive, it can potentially indicate an imbalance within the body :
- Digestive problems/constipation
- Not sleeping well
- Excessive crying/colicky
- Always “under the weather”/decreased immune system function
- Uneven skull shape
- Frequent ear infections
- Latching problems
- Favors looking one way more than the other
- Allergy/sinus problems
- Skin conditions/eczema
- Neck and back pain
- Digestive issues
- Tension/migraine headaches
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Sleep issues
Listen to your Instincts
Who knows you better than yourself? Who knows your child better than you as their parent? No one. So watch them. Listen to them. Don’t ignore the alarm signals going off in your own body. Our bodies will “tell” us if we are out of balance. Your child will “tell” you if they are out of balance. If you believe you or your child are not living their lives at their greatest potential, I encourage you to look into chiropractic care. This will help your bodies function better.
Imbalances can happen in utero, during childbirth and as the child is growing and developing. If children are left to develop while out of balance or alignment, this can lead to stress on their nervous system which can lead to future health problems. As a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, I suggest searching for a provider with pediatric experience in your area by visiting icpa4kids. I also encourage you to look at some of the research conducted supporting children receiving chiropractic care.
Adjustments for pregnant women and children are safe and gentle and are tailored to you or your child’s individual needs.
