Hypnobabies in Heels

Making Tulsa Childbirth Education Mainstream

My name is Sarah Coffin and I absolutely adore shoes. Wedges mostly, TOMS are a favorite - strappy sandals, boots, you name it, I love it. Lately, I've had to be a bit pickier on my choices however, because, well, age. But there isn't much that is going to keep me from eyeing a pair in the distance and feeling nothing but love for those beauties. These wine-colored pieces of magnificence met my criteria and were quickly on their way home to be snuggled and adored.

I tend to live vicariously through my shoes. And my hair. Oh my gosh, and my jewelry! But those are all other blogs. This blog right here is about teaching Hypnobabies in Heels

Why would I want to stress a point about teaching Hypnobabies classes while wearing heels?

Well, when I tell people I teach Hypnobabies, and that I am the only Hypnobabies Instructor in Oklahoma, I'm generally met with well-meaning stares and a lack of breathing on the part of my other conversationalist.

Seriously, you can breathe. I'm not going to hypnotize you.

These are some of the reactions I've gotten:

  • "You hypnotize babies?"
  • "Can't they call it something different? Because, hypnosis."
  • "That just sounds weird."
  • "Sounds a little too hippie for me."
  • "Oh. Well, I'm giving birth in a hospital."
  • "What if I don't want a natural childbirth? Are you going to still let me come to class?"
  • "Why wouldn't I just do the Hypnobabies Self Study course?"

My job right now is to put to rest all the concerns that people have regarding this complete childbirth education course and help you learn why this class is so much more than all the assumptions made above.

"You hypnotize babies?"

While the program is called Hypnobabies, I am not, in fact hypnotizing your baby. What I am doing is teaching medical-grade hypnosis techniques that you can use to help you have a profound sense of relaxation and confidence during your pregnancy and birth. These same techniques are used in surgery and dental work for those that have a life-threatening allergy to  sedation drugs. Sound like serious techniques? It is. And it works.

"Can't they call it something different? Because, hypnosis."

These wine-colored beauties need their own hashtag.

While the term hypnosis may only conjure up images of fraternity parties and stage hypnotists (thank you Kappa Sigma fraternity for that experience), the hypnosis is what makes this method so effective. You actually learn how to retrain your brain to think differently, and most importantly, positively about childbirth and your innate abilities as the birthing mother.

You never are  "put under" or become a subject of hypnosis. Everything we do in class and that you practice on your own is self-hypnosis. Sounds a whole lot less scary than being made to quack like a duck every time someone says contraction.

"That just sounds weird."

Most new things do. But when you start to learn about them, you wonder how in the world you ever lived without them. But is weird really a reason to refrain from exploring all your options for local childbirth classes?

"Sounds a little too hippie for me."

I can guarantee you, you will not feel obligated to be something you are not in this class. Every class has been filled with authentic, genuine women and their partners eager to learn the most up-to-date and evidence-based information available regarding healthy pregnancies and childbirth.

You get to make all your own choices on where and how to give birth. I am giving you all the tools and resources you need to make confident choices that are right for you.

"Oh. Well, I'm giving birth in a hospital."

Awesome! Each of Tulsa's hospitals is the perfect environment for you to utilize your Hypnobabies techniques. You learn in class how to communicate effectively with the hospital staff at your chosen place of birth. We focus on respecting the position of the staff at the hospitals, their responsibility for your care and how to help make your experience with Hypnobabies be a positive one at any birth location.

"What if I don't want a natural childbirth? Are you going to still let me come to class?"

Hypnobabies main goal is to teach you to have an easier and more comfortable childbirth. While many choose to have a natural childbirth, it is not, by any means, a pre-requisite. Regardless of how you choose to give birth, you will walk away from this class confident. The tools are there for you to use. What you do with them is up to you.

"Why wouldn't I just do the Hypnobabies Self Study course?"

I have had many doula clients choose to do the Hypnobabies Self Study course before there was an in-person class and they all had their own version of successful, easier and more comfortable childbirths using the home study program. I loved watching and participating in their births using tools I learned as a HypnoDoula.

But, I am telling you, there is nothing like the camaraderie and support found in a classroom setting with other like-minded parents-to-be. You get to learn from each other, find new perspectives and stories and get hands-on training and instruction in something entirely different than anything else in Tulsa.

The classes taught by a Certified Instructor have much more detail and information than is available with the Home Study.

Hypnobabies may be new to Tulsa, but the instinctual nature of gathering together to learn is one of the most effective things produced by humanity. Now that the option is here, gather together! Learn with each other! Find other expecting parents to join you on this journey.

I promise you I will almost always have on a magnificent pair of heels because I am committed to making your priorities in childbirth education move beyond assumptions and become much more mainstream.
